If you are following the news, you might be aware that nearly 100 countries, including India were hit by what is believed to be the biggest-ever recorded cyber-attack. So let us know more about what is Ransomware ?

What has happened?

A new variant of the Ransom.CryptXXX family (Detected as Ransom.Wannacry) of ransomware began spreading widely impacting a large number of computers worldwide.

What is ransomware?

Ransomware is a kind of cyber-attack that involves hackers taking control of a computer system and blocking access to it until a ransom is paid.

How does ransomware affect a computer?

The ransomware is normally contained within an email attachment or web link that masquerades as something innocent. Once opened it encrypts the hard drive, making it impossible to access or retrieve anything stored on it.

What is the WannaCry ransomware?

The WannaCry Ransomware encrypts all files stored on a computer and connected share drives. Once the files are encrypted the infected computer displays a notice requesting payment to obtain the key required to decrypt the files and regain access to the data in them. The ransom note indicates that the payment amount will be doubled after three days. If payment is not made after seven days, the encrypted files will be deleted.

What are best practices for protecting against Ransomware?

  • Not opening attachments included in unsolicited or suspicious emails.
  • Email is one of the main infection methods. Be wary of unusual emails especially if they contain links and/or attachments.
  • Be extremely wary of any Microsoft Office email attachment that advises you to enable macros to view its content. Do not enable macros unless you are absolutely sure that this is a legitimate email from a trusted source.
